Shoot manual focus when you can. This will save you power and avoid out-of-focus shots which are jarring in a time-lapse.
Infinity (which often includes the horizon) is all you need for many time-lapse subjects, but if you need nearby objects to be in focus, too, consider using hyperfocal distance.
